There are three kinds of user on Basilisk.
Clients are ordinary folks who register and log in. They have the right to post to the Clients forum, and comment on what other people post. They can also read the various static pages like this and the Herald's FAQ. And for them, that's that.
Heralds are Clients who have identified themselves to the system administrators as heralds. They're not necessarily titled, or even experienced, provided they're interested in heraldry and willing to be called heralds. They are expected to be subscribed to the Blazons email list. They have the right to post and comment on the Herald's forum, and to post and comment on the Submissions section. A certain amount of lurking is permitted for new heralds, but after this active participation is expected. If you don't contribute regularly, Crux will be asking pointy questions about why your access shouldn't downgraded to Client level. Fail to log in for more than 20 weeks and your account will revert.
Staff are Heralds who are working for Crux or Rocket Herald. They have the right to post and comment on the Staff forum, and to administer the Submissions section. They mainly act as co-administrators but without all the tedious system-level stuff.
There are also Administrators, who run the site. Currently there's only one, Karl Faustus von Aachen, Mortar Herald.
