Chess Challenge - 2012

Saturday, 17 March 2012 - 2pm to 6pm

The Barony of Stormhold is proudly hosting the third Chess Challenge! The Shires of Arrowsreach and Borderscros will be defending their titles of Champions of Chess. All challengers on the field of battle and chess are welcome. All Newcomers welcome. This is a pot-luck pi...cnic, with a tourney and many rounds of chess.

Rules for the tourney are-

  • Round 1 - Pawns: Everyone to fight with sharpened sticks (i.e. thrusting spears).
  • Round 2 - Knights: Counted Blows e.g.- each fighter gets to throw five blows or three good blows with arms & legs not lost.
  • Round 3 - Bishops: Maces and shields (in the Medieval Period, churchmen could not draw blood, Bishop Odo the brother of William the Conqueror, is depicted in the Bayeaux tapestry wielding a club.
  • Round 4 - Rooks: Sword and large shield (defence).
  • Round 5 - Queens: Queens are the best protected and each combatant fights with two guardsmen drawn at random, fight to end with the death of the "queen".
  • Final Round- The two finalists meet on the field in charge of half of the combatants drawn at random, against one another in a melee. Winner is the last "king" left alive.
